The value of higher education (HE) is in question (Dollinger, 2018). The rigid and archaic structure of the system is outdated, and so too is the tenure process (Stromquist, 2017). Adjunct faculty are the majority (American Association of University Professors, 2018), yet their needs are not prioritized (Bickerstaff & Chavarin, 2018).

Appreciation: Ronald G. Sultana (1958-2023)

Appreciation: Ronald G. Sultana (1958-2023)Like most people in my country and many beyond, especially in the education research and sociology fields, I was shocked by  Ronald G. State Sponsored Imposition of Ideology on American University Campuses - The Urban Lens Newsletter

Urban America would be a different – and lesser – place without universities.  They provide vocational instruction and prepare young people for the workforce.  But more importantly, the liberal tradition in higher education increases our capacity to understand and reshape the world far beyond the university.  Yet liberal education is under siege throughout a range of states in the United States.

It has become imperative to develop university policies that view these institutions as true drivers of transformation in the political, economic, social, environmental and cultural spheres.

In today's fast-paced world, the need for continuous learning among adults is more important than ever, particularly during times of crisis. This is a sentiment that the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) emphasised already 50 years ago, highlighting in their report ’Recurrent Education: A Strategy for Lifelong Learning (1973)’ (attached below).
