Embracing a culture of lifelong learning: A personal perspective by Peter Kearns

The excellent paper by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) Embracing a culture of lifelong learning (featured below and attached}, written as a contribution to the UNESCO Futures of Education initiative, merits widespread discussion. The paper combines vision and practical suggestions required in “reimagining knowledge, education, and learning in a world of increasing complexity, uncertainty, and depravity”.

Notes from the third meeting of the PASCAL Learning Cities Networks “Reimagining Inclusive Economic Futures” (RIEF) on 6 Jan 2021

Judith James introduced the meeting and explained that Michelle Murphy has been in touch to explain that a funding bid had not been successful, so Derry and Strabane Learning City were urgently seeking funding in order to continue. As a result she would be unable to present slides today.

The first presentation was by Nishat Tasnim Maria, and was a combined presentation about two major cities in Bangladesh- Dhaka (the capital) and Khulna [presentation appears below].

PIMA Bulletin No. 34 - January 2021

We begin this ambiguous New Year on an upbeat note: Chris Brooks demurs at the prevailing doom and gloom with which we farewelled 2020, noting causes for collective pride. Yet there is also a blunt closing challenge: in his rural village ‘flat-earthers’ display ‘thoughtless thinking and a failure to identify and examine the facts’. ‘Surely this is a major educational failure. What should we do?’ Brooks asks.

Notes from the second meeting of the PASCAL Learning Cities Networks “Reimagining Inclusive Economic Futures” (RIEF) on 26 Nov 2020

The first presentation was by Palmira Jucevicienne and Robertus Jucevicienne and focused on the highly successful rejuvenation of the Old Town part of Kaunas in Lithuania. It was pointed out that a Learning City does not function for itself, it is established for problem-solving and the biggest problem at the present time is that of sustainable development.

Notes from the first meeting of the PASCAL Learning Cities Networks “Reimagining Inclusive Economic Futures” (RIEF) on 28 Oct 2020

Mike Osborne, Director of PASCAL, introduced the meeting and explained that post-Covid, it was recognised that there was a need to re-energise the PASCAL Learning Cities Networks (LCN), and this was the first meeting for the “Reimagining Inclusive Economic Futures” (RIEF”) network. The PASCAL International Observatory works closely with the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) and has recently been running a series of joint webinars with UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. PASCAL assists cities in developing their applications to join the GNLC and has a focus on the ways in which universities can support the development of Learning Cities. Mike invited all attendees to introduce themselves and to explain a little about the city, university, network or organisation they were representing.
