Call for contributions | Special Issue of International Journal of Training and Development: “The impact of skills and training on local development”, guest editor Martina Fuchs

Skills and training are key issues to improve local development, in the academic debate as well as in policy practice. This Special Issue focusses on vocational and professional education and training. These are activities relevant for business. They comprise technical and organisational skills and routines, social and self-competencies relevant to accomplish daily work tasks, and professional attitudes relevant for companies. Universities as sites of professional education play a role, as well as vocational schools and further public and private bodies.

Remembering Professor Angus Hawkins

It is with deep regret that UALL announces the death of our former colleague, friend, and Executive Committee member, Professor Angus Hawkins of Oxford University.  Angus died suddenly of a heart attack over Christmas and colleagues and friends are devastated. He was only 67 and had recently returned from a sabbatical. The last time we saw Angus was online at the Association’s AGM in early December.

Notes from the third meeting of the PASCAL Learning Cities Networks “Reimagining Inclusive Economic Futures” (RIEF) on 6 Jan 2021

Judith James introduced the meeting and explained that Michelle Murphy has been in touch to explain that a funding bid had not been successful, so Derry and Strabane Learning City were urgently seeking funding in order to continue. As a result she would be unable to present slides today.

The first presentation was by Nishat Tasnim Maria, and was a combined presentation about two major cities in Bangladesh- Dhaka (the capital) and Khulna [presentation appears below].

PIMA Bulletin No. 34 - January 2021

We begin this ambiguous New Year on an upbeat note: Chris Brooks demurs at the prevailing doom and gloom with which we farewelled 2020, noting causes for collective pride. Yet there is also a blunt closing challenge: in his rural village ‘flat-earthers’ display ‘thoughtless thinking and a failure to identify and examine the facts’. ‘Surely this is a major educational failure. What should we do?’ Brooks asks.
